Coccus viridis
Mdudu
Nymphs and adults suck sap from the lower surface of the leaves and green shoots. Sap sucking and excretion of honeydew produce sooty mould. Honeydew serves as a medium for sooty mould fungus to grow. Sooty mould inhibits photosynthesis, which might diminish productivity and threaten ants. Green scale populations in large numbers can weaken and yellow the plants and cause them to lose their leaves. Feeding too much makes infected branches wilt.
Coccus viridis has natural enemies, predators and parasites. Natural enemies include predators, such as ladybirds (Chilocorus), caterpillars (Noctuidae: Eublemma), and parasites (Aphelinidae: Coccophagus, some Encyrtidae and Eulophidae). The parasitic fungus Cephalosporium lecanii is particularly effective in the rainy season when it can kill large colonies of the green coffee scale quickly. Biological treatment has been practised primarily on coffee, where the pest is a significant threat. Neem treatments have some effects on scales.
Always consider an integrated approach with preventive measures together with biological treatments. Organophosphates like Ethion can treat a range of pests including scales. Follow the local regulation on chemical treatment. When using a pesticide, always wear protective clothing and follow the instructions on the product label, such as dosage, the timing of application, and pre-harvest interval.
Damage is caused by Coccus viridis. Most stages, including post-harvest, are susceptible to infestation. Reproduction occurs exclusively without fertilization. Populations are composed solely of females. Green scale is polyphagous and has a wide host range, including vegetables, fruits and ornamental crops. By preference, it feeds on the lower surface of leaves and green shoots, but at high-scale densities, it will move onto the main twigs. Adults and nymphs can usually be spotted along the midrib and veins of leaves.
