Maalik Singh Sugarcane hard stem borer also known as Sugarcane Borer. Control the larvae mechanically. You need not use any pesticide. However, releasing trichogramma egg parasitoid is a wise management practice. Efficiency by pesticide is very insignificant. Search in your sugarcane field for primary infestation that is viewed as "dead heart" symptom and secondary infestation as "white head". Check for egg mass underside of the leaves. If they hatch out, then it’s a tremendous hazard because it will cause fresh attack in second generation. Each stalk may contain 100-150 larvae inside, so destroy such invested stalks with larvae mechanically. If you don't follow it for each generation, the pest may grow geometrically in 4 to 5 generations. This is a most devastating pest in sugarcane and 100% crop loss may occur if this pest in not managed in a planned way.

Tajinder Dhillon But for economy, there’s little output or efficiency by chemical treatment for hard stem borer in sugarcane. You have to know, study and practically observe the different stages of stem borer infestation or life cycle in sugarcane field. Specially the time of laying eggs, position of egg mass, favourable climatic conditions, larvae, pupae, and adults. Then you should also study overlapping generations. There are lot of things to observe, among others, you have to comb off all infected talks before tying. This type of monitoring and combing off should be continued every fortnight and eradicate infected stalks, egg mass and larvae. Then you can expect an yield of 70 to 80 tons per acre. Although my highest record is 127 ton/ac yield
