Recommendations

Organic Control

To prevent and treat certain plant diseases, apply Bordeaux paste or copper oxychloride paste and spray a mixture of Bordeaux (1%) or copper oxychloride (0.3%). If you see signs of the disease, you can also rub the affected parts and paint them with a copper mixture. For a stronger treatment, spray a Bordeaux mixture made by mixing 5 kg of copper sulphate and 5 kg of hydrated lime in 50 liters of water. First, dissolve the copper sulphate in 25 liters of water, mix the hydrated lime in the remaining 25 liters, and then combine both solutions while stirring continuously.

Chemical Control

Applications of Carbendazim 50% WP are recommended for the control of this disease. Other products like Hexaconazole 5% EC and Chlorothalonil 75% WP are also used.

What caused it?

Fungus grows on scale insects on plants; it does not kill the branches itself and the scale insects are the main reason for twig damage. It develops during the rainy season and stops growing in summer, leaving black bands.

Preventive Measures

  • Avoid varieties susceptible to the disease.
  • Remove and destroy severely infected twigs and branches to stop the spread.
