Care
Maize, also known as corn, is a cereal grain from the Poaceae family. It was domesticated in southern Mexico approximately 10,000 years ago and has spread over the rest of the world in the last 500 years due to its ability to grow under various climatic conditions. Maize counts as a staple crop and plays an important role as food, feed, and fuel.
Soil
Zea mays grows best on well drained and fertile loamy or alluvial soils. However, it is possible to grow maize on a wide variety of soils ranging from sand to clay. The crop is tolerant to soil acidity, neutralizing soil acidity through liming can increase yields.
Climate
One reason why maize is grown all over the world is its ability to grow in a wide range of agro-climatic conditions. However, moderate temperatures and rainfall are most favorable for the crop.
