Homemade remedy against False Smut on rice

False Smut (Villosiclava virens) on rice is a plant pathogen in the form of fungal infestation and is mainly found in the warm and humid rice-growing areas of Asia. It appears only after the panicle exsertion and infects the plant in the early flowering stage. The pathogen reduces the grain quality as well as the grain yield up to 35 percent. To identify it, inspect the spikelets of the Plant for velvety smut balls. At the onset, they are orange and will gradually turn into a yellowish green or a greenish black.

If your rice is infected, organic farmers recommend this easy-to-produce homemade remedy:

500 grams of basil (ocimum gratissimum) leaves and 10 liters of water are required to mix up the extract.

  • use a blender to grind the leaves for 1 min and leave overnight
  • strain and dilute in 10 liters of water
  • apply this by spraying every 7 days in the coolest hours of the day
